Nestled between the rugged Coast Mountains and the sparkling waters of the Pacific Ocean, North Vancouver, BC, boasts breathtaking natural beauty. However, harnessing this beauty into a cohesive and thriving landscape design comes with its own set of challenges. From steep slopes to dense forests, North Vancouver presents unique obstacles that require careful planning and innovative solutions for successful landscaping projects. Here, we explore some of the top landscaping challenges in this picturesque corner of British Columbia.

: North Vancouver's proximity to wilderness areas means that encounters with wildlife are not uncommon. Deer, raccoons, and bears are frequent visitors to residential neighborhoods, posing challenges for maintaining gardens and landscapes. Fencing, motion-activated deterrents, and carefully chosen plant species can help mitigate wildlife damage while promoting coexistence with native fauna.

: As a desirable place to live, North Vancouver is experiencing rapid urbanization, leading to increased development and habitat fragmentation. Balancing the need for housing and infrastructure with preserving green spaces and natural habitats is a constant challenge for city planners and landscape designers alike. Innovative approaches such as green roofs, rain gardens, and urban forests can help mitigate the impacts of urbanization while enhancing the city's livability.

How to Create a Sustainable Garden in North Vancouver

With its stunning natural beauty and temperate climate, North Vancouver provides an ideal setting for cultivating a sustainable garden. By adopting eco-friendly practices and working in harmony with the local environment, you can create a lush and thriving garden that not only enhances your outdoor space but also contributes positively to the ecosystem. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or just starting out, here's how to create a sustainable garden in North Vancouver.

           Choose Native Plants

One of the most effective ways to promote sustainability in your garden is by selecting native plants. Native species are well adapted to the local climate, soil conditions, and wildlife, requiring less water, fertilizer, and pesticides to thrive. Consider incorporating native plants such as Pacific bleeding heart, red-flowering currant, and sword ferns into your garden design.

           Practice Water Conservation

Water is a precious resource, especially in regions like North Vancouver where rainfall can be variable. To conserve water in your garden, opt for drought-tolerant plants that require minimal irrigation once established. Mulching around plants helps retain soil moisture and suppresses weed growth, reducing the need for frequent watering. Consider installing a rain barrel to collect rainwater for use in your garden, further reducing your reliance on municipal water sources.

           Implement Organic Gardening Practices

Embrace organic gardening methods to minimize your garden's environmental impact and promote soil health. Avoid synthetic pesticides and herbicides, opting instead for natural alternatives such as insecticidal soap and neem oil. Practice crop rotation and companion planting to naturally control pests and diseases while improving soil fertility. Composting kitchen scraps and yard waste provides nutrient-rich organic matter for your garden, reducing the need for chemical fertilizers.

           Support Pollinators

Pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds play a crucial role in maintaining healthy ecosystems and sustaining food production. Create habitat and food sources for pollinators by planting a variety of flowering plants rich in nectar and pollen. Include native wildflowers such as goldenrod, lupine, and ocean spray to attract and support local pollinator populations. Avoid using pesticides that harm beneficial insects and consider providing nesting sites for solitary bees and other native pollinators.

           Embrace Sustainable Garden Design

Design your garden with sustainability in mind, incorporating features that reduce resource consumption and promote biodiversity. Install permeable paving materials such as gravel or permeable pavers to reduce runoff and allow rainwater to infiltrate the soil. Create wildlife-friendly habitats such as birdhouses, butterfly shelters, and ponds to attract beneficial wildlife and enhance biodiversity in your garden. Maximize energy efficiency by planting deciduous trees strategically to provide shade in summer while allowing sunlight to penetrate in winter.

By following these tips, you can create a sustainable garden that not only beautifies your outdoor space but also contributes to the health and well-being of the environment. With a commitment to sustainability and a reverence for the natural world, your garden can become a sanctuary of beauty, biodiversity, and ecological harmony.

that thrive in the region's mild, coastal climate, selecting the right plants becomes paramount. Understanding the nuances of North Vancouver's weather patterns and soil conditions can empower residents to create gardens that flourish year-round.

One of the key factors to consider when choosing plants for North Vancouver is the region's temperate maritime climate. Characterized by mild winters, moderate rainfall, and relatively cool summers, this coastal environment provides an ideal habitat for a wide range of plant species. Embracing native plants adapted to these conditions not only enhances garden resilience but also fosters biodiversity and ecological balance.

For gardeners seeking year-round color and texture, native evergreens such as the Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata) and Pacific Rhododendron (Rhododendron macrophyllum) are perennial favorites. These stalwart species not only provide structure and visual interest but also offer essential habitats and food for local wildlife, including birds and beneficial insects.

In addition to evergreens, flowering shrubs such as the Pacific Dogwood (Cornus nuttallii) and Salmonberry (Rubus spectabilis) add bursts of color to North Vancouver's gardens throughout the spring and summer months. With their delicate blossoms and graceful foliage, these native plants evoke the beauty of the region's natural landscapes while attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

For ground cover and erosion control, native ferns such as the Sword Fern (Polystichum munitum) and Deer Fern (Blechnum spicant) thrive in North Vancouver's shaded woodlands and moist forest floors. Their lush foliage and low-maintenance requirements make them ideal choices for underplanting trees and filling in shady garden spaces.

In addition to native species, many ornamental plants from other temperate regions around the world thrive in North Vancouver's climate. Perennials such as the Himalayan Blue Poppy (Meconopsis betonicifolia) and Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum) add exotic flair to gardens while complementing the region's natural beauty.

When selecting plants for North Vancouver, it's essential to consider soil conditions and sun exposure. Coastal soils tend to be acidic and well-draining, making them ideal for a wide range of plant species. However, certain areas may have specific soil characteristics that influence plant growth and health. Conducting a soil test and amending the soil as needed can help ensure optimal growing conditions for your chosen garden plants.

In addition to soil considerations, sun exposure plays a crucial role in plant selection. While North Vancouver enjoys relatively mild summers, some areas may receive more shade or sun exposure depending on their orientation and proximity to trees or buildings. Choosing plants that are well-suited to the light conditions in a particular garden area can help promote healthy growth and blooming.

As you seek to create a vibrant and sustainable landscape in North Vancouver, the importance of plant selection cannot be overstated. By choosing species that are well-adapted to the region's climate and soil conditions, you can cultivate a garden that thrives year-round while contributing to the ecological richness and beauty of the community. Whether embracing native plants or ornamental species from around the world, the key to successful gardening in North Vancouver lies in selecting plants that harmonize with the natural environment and bring joy to gardeners and wildlife alike.

Why Should I Use a Snow Removal Company?

We all work hard to earn a living, and most of us don’t enjoy spending our hard-earned money on repairs and maintenance. Even if you see the logic in paying for professional lawn care during the growing season, it can be hard to justify hiring an expert to remove snow from your home or business. The snow will go away on its own eventually, right?

While snow will eventually melt on its own, there are several good reasons why you might want to entrust your snow removal to a snow removal company instead of Mother Nature. And while shoveling the first snow of the season from your front porch might make you feel nostalgic, here are a few good reasons to call us when picking up a snow shovel no longer brings back fond memories.

First, snow can be dangerous. It is wet and slippery on its own, and if it thaws and refreezes into ice, it becomes an accident waiting to happen. One wrong foot placement can send you crashing to the ground! If you are young and fall at your own home, you’ll likely get away with a bruise and a few days of soreness. The very young and the elderly can be seriously injured by such falls, however, and if you are a business owner, you could be liable for injuries that happen on your property.

Accumulated snow can be equally dangerous to your roof and your landscape. Roofs are only built to hold so much weight, and snow is heavy. Snow dams can form with as little as six inches of accumulation; heavy storms that drop two or more feet of snow can collapse an entire roof. Similarly, snow and ice buildup on trees can bring branches or even whole sections of the tree to the ground. A large branch encased in ice can do serious damage to your home, vehicle, and anything (or anyone) else that happens to be underneath it.

Removing snow from a roof or tree can also be very dangerous if you don’t have the right tools and training. We completely understand if you want to clear your own porch, but we strongly recommend that you leave above-your-head snow removal to professionals like us.

Finally, if you are a business owner, professional snow removal can be the difference between customers pulling into your parking lot or continuing down the street to a competitor who bothered to clear the snow for them. A snow-free parking lot and sidewalk is one of the best advertisements you can purchase after a significant snowstorm!

Much like lawn care during the summer, snow removal is a necessary chore during the winter months. Don’t risk your safety or your business’s reputation by putting off or ignoring this important task - let us handle your snow removal so that you can focus on what is important to you, whether that is running your business or enjoying a hot cup of tea by the fireplace!

How High Can My Retaining Wall Be?

How High Can My Retaining Wall Be?

Retaining walls are a great way to level sloped yards, prevent soil erosion, or add a stone design element to a landscape. While they can be built in nearly any shape or length, there are limits to their height - especially if you are building the wall yourself.

Many factors go into determining the maximum height of a

           retaining wall

, but the general rule is that retaining walls should not be taller than four feet. Fortunately, a four foot retaining wall is more than sufficient to meet the needs of most homeowners. Most yards are already leveled to some extent when the house is built, so the need for an extra tall retaining wall is unlikely.

One of the reasons for this height restriction is basic physics. In order for a retaining wall to be sturdy enough to withstand the elements, it needs to be at least one-third as wide as it is tall. This means that a four foot retaining wall needs to be at least 16 inches thick to support itself. If a wall is too tall, the required thickness becomes impractical.

If you live within the jurisdiction of the District of North Vancouver, you might want to keep your retaining wall under three feet. Any retaining walls built in North Vancouver that are more than three feet tall require a permit, and that permit must include a design that has been approved by a professional engineer. While obtaining a permit is completely possible, it is probably not worth the hassle and extra expense - especially if the primary function of the wall is decoration.

If soil erosion or drainage issues are the main reason for your retaining wall, there are several options you can consider in place of a tall retaining wall. One of the simplest options is to create terraces in your yard - instead of building one really tall retaining wall, you can build two or three shorter ones, giving your yard a tiered look. If this is not practical, other drainage control options might solve your issues without needing a wall at all.

If you absolutely must have a retaining wall that is more than three feet high, it is imperative that you consult an engineering professional. Not only is this required to obtain a permit, it ensures that your wall is properly supported. A retaining wall with insufficient support is likely to come tumbling down in severe weather (or simply from the slow decay of time), risking damage to both lives and property. If a tall retaining wall is your only option, don’t try to cut corners. Build it right so that it is safe and secure

!Retaining walls are a great addition to a landscape, but they must be properly constructed. If they are too high, they can easily become a hazard (not to mention a legal violation).

As the weather starts to grow warmer and the spring rains fall, your landscaping plants should begin to spring to life. Your yard is likely full of new growth, but not all of that growth fits into your

. Hedges in particular tend to reach for the sun with unruly, haphazard growth. While it is good to know that your hedges are healthy, this growth can be unsightly or can make your yard look unkempt.

Before you rush outside to trim your hedges, however, there are a few things to consider. Every type of hedge has a certain time frame in which pruning is healthy. Some shrubs (such as hollies) can be pruned at nearly any time of the year. But for most species, pruning too early (or too late) in the year can actually damage your hedges!

If you have cedar hedges, it is best to wait until late June or early July to prune. You want to allow the hedge to produce new growth so that you can ensure that you do not over prune. Once your hedge has ended its yearly growing cycle, you can prune up to two-thirds of the new growth. Cutting any more than this off may hinder the hedge’s ability to produce new growth next year!

Boxwood hedges are more forgiving - you can begin trimming them early in the summer. If needed, they can be trimmed at any time during the growing season, so long as you give them enough time to recover before winter.

For flowering shrubs, you must time your pruning so that it does not interfere with flowering. If a shrub flowers in the summer, you can prune it as early as February or March. If your hedge flowers in the spring, however, you should wait until after it has flowered to prune. Pruning spring flowering shrubs too early can actually remove their buds, as buds develop on old growth during the winter!

Another thing you should take into account when pruning your hedges has nothing to do with the hedge itself - it has to do with the birds that might be nesting in it! Hedges are ideal places for birds to keep their eggs and hatchlings safe from predators. Unfortunately, most birds nest from March to August - the same time that you generally want to prune your hedges. If you notice a nest in your hedge, it is best to wait to prune until August. Your hedge will recover much better than the baby birds you might dislodge by being impatient!

Regardless of the type of hedge you have, the health of the hedge (and its potential inhabitants) should be your first concern when deciding when to prune. While it can be tempting to tidy up your plants as soon as the weather is nice enough, there are many times when it is best to wait. If you are ever unsure of the best time to prune your hedge, give us a call!

There are several factors to consider when deciding how often to trim your hedges. The first is the species of plant that your hedge is made of. Boxwood, one of the most common shrubs used for hedges, should receive a good pruning every spring. It can then be touched up as needed throughout the growing season, but since boxwood hedges grow slowly, they should only be trimmed for aesthetics after their annual pruning. Avoid trimming boxwood in the fall so that it has time to recover before winter sets in.

Cedar hedges also only require one trim per year, but are generally trimmed during the summer. Cedar should be trimmed after it has finished its growth for the year, but before the new growth becomes indistinguishable from the existing hedge. Faster growing hedges like dogwood may need to be trimmed as often as three times a year!

Another factor that determines the frequency of hedge trimming is the style that you want for your lawn or garden. Formal hedges give a landscape an elegant and refined look, but they must be trimmed often to maintain their crisp lines and well-defined shapes. Each trim will remove very little foliage (usually 5cm or less), but trimmings may need to occur as often as every month during the growing season.

Informal hedges, on the other hand, will often only require one trim per year. Informal hedges are allowed to grow more freely, giving them a natural look. Their annual trim is simply to maintain their size, not to produce any particular shape. The species of your hedge may help determine whether your hedge should be formal or informal (as certain plants are better suited for each type), but if you are establishing a new hedge, the choice is entirely up to you!

The final considerations are the hedge’s age, health, and desired size. If a hedge is young and is still growing to its full size, it will not need to be trimmed as often as a mature hedge that you want to keep within its bounds. It is also better for a hedge’s heath to remove less foliage during each trimming. If a hedge is struggling, it may need to be trimmed more often so that it does not go into shock and die.

Because of the many factors involved, there is no one-size-fits-all answer to how often hedges should be trimmed. The type of hedge you have plays a large role in determining how to properly care for it, and the other factors we just discussed should be considered as well. If you are unsure of how to properly maintain your hedge, don’t hesitate to give us a call!

What Planting Zone Is North Vancouver In?

When choosing plants, trees, and shrubs for a landscape or garden, it is important to choose greenery that is well suited to the climate you live in. For perennial plants, one of the most important considerations is a species’ cold tolerance. If your climate gets too cold or stays cold for too long, certain plants will not last long in your landscape regardless of how well you water them and maintain their soil.

Plant hardiness zones are one of the easiest ways to tell if a certain type of plant will thrive where you live. Zones are numbered from 1 to 13 based on the lowest temperatures generally experienced in that area, with 1 being the coldest and 13 being the warmest. Zones are further differentiated by adding an “a” or a “b” after the zone number, with “a” zones having slightly colder winters than “b” zones.

North Vancouver is in zones 7b and 8a. This means that our average minimum winter temperatures are between -15°C and -9.5°C. While much of Canada has colder winters, North Vancouver’s winters are tempered by its proximity to the coast. This allows us to grow many trees, shrubs, and vines that our inland neighbors can only enjoy in photographs!

Many gorgeous perennials thrive in zones 7 and 8, bringing life to our landscapes all year long. The berries that grow on holly bushes are a classic way to add color to winter landscapes, while trees like weeping cherries or Japanese maples can add shape and texture. Vines like winter jasmine can add additional visual appeal to a winter garden, and lavender and lenten roses will remain green even when there is snow on the ground. Rhododendrons and camellias are shrubs that will also stay green year round. Plants like dogwood may lose their leaves, but their interesting bark makes them a great addition to a landscape even in the winter.

For annual plants, the lowest winter temperatures are not as important as the length of the growing season. North Vancouver also enjoys a longer growing season than its inland neighbors. Our last frost usually occurs in mid-April, and our first frost does not generally occur until mid-November. This gives us a full seven months to plant, tend, and enjoy the annual plants in our gardens. Our growing season temperatures are perfect for a wide variety of flowers, herbs, and vegetables - as long as you pay attention to the last frost dates, the possibilities for your summer garden are nearly endless!

The examples listed here are just a few of the plants that thrive in planting zones 7 and 8. When shopping for plants, always check the planting dates and zones given on the seed packages or sapling containers. With a moderate climate and a long growing season,
